Lesson 1~ The Arrival of the Europeans

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain (Europe) looking for a water route to Asia (Indies). Successful??
Never found water route to Asia. What did he find instead? A group of islands in the Carribiean Sea (west indies). Many
Europeans thought Columbus found a "new world" because the Native Americans were already living there. Why did Columbus want to find Asia? To trade with them. In 1947, England sent John Cabot (italian) saild west to find a water route to Asia.

Explore~ Travel to unfamiliar places in order to learn about them.

Water route to Asia? No, Cabot explored the eastern coast of Norht America. (NJ) English claimed ownership of the land.
In 1524, France sent Verrazano (italian)- dropped anchor along NJ, met the Lenape, and traded with them.
About a 100 yrs. later (About 1609) Henry Hudson was sent by Dutch (Netherlands) to find a water route to Asia.
He found Lenape and traded with them.

Geography skills~

Latitude~ is a measure of how far north or south a place is from the equator.

Parallel~ lines that awlays remain the same distance apart.

Degrees~ are used to measure distance on Earth's surface.

Longitude~ lines on a map or globe.

Prime Meridian- the first line, or starting place, for meausuring lines of longitude.

Meridian- lines of longitude also are called meridian.

Global Grid~ by using the global grid, you can locate the address of any place in the world.

Lesson 2~ New Netherlands

Colony~ the place ruled by another country.

Governor~an official appointed or elected to rule a colony or state.

Immigrant~ a person who leaves one country to live in another.

Patroon~ a landowner in New Netherland who had to bring 50 settlers to the colony to help settle his land.

Slavery~ the practice of people owning other people and forcing them to work.

Constition~ A document that contains the basic rules for governing a colony or country.

Assembly~ a group of lawmakers.

Delegates~ members of the assembly chosen to speak or vote the people of the colony.

Proprieter~A person who owned land and had the right to start a colony.

East Jersey and West Jersey were different. East Jersey had small farms and towns while West Jersey were Quakers while the people in East Jersey worshiped in many different churches. New York influenced East Jersey Philidephia influenced West Jersey.

1st governor of New Netherland was Corelious Mey.
3rd governor of New Netherland was Peter Minuit.

Lesson 3~ English New Jersey

Proprietor~ a person who owned land and had the right to start a colony [Sir George Carteret, Lord John Berkeley]

Constitution~ a document that contains the basic rules for governing a colony or country

Assembly~ a group of lawmakers

Delegate~ a person chosen to speak or vote for others

Netherland = Holland = Dutch

Lesson 4~ Life in New Jersey Colony

Middle Colonies were New Jersey, New York, Pennslyvania, and Delaware.

Industry~ the making of things on a large scale, espicaslly by people and machines working together.

1700 ~ 14,000 people in NJ
1750 ~ 71,000 people in NJ

Why NJ?
  • religious freedom
  • rich farmland
  • (low rents, goods, to trade)
  • forced against their will (ensalved Afracians) to work on farms in colonist

Biggest landowners in the colony were proprieters.
  • The people that owned the land most land became the richest in the colony.

Indentured Servants~ agreed to work for landowners in exchange for a trip to the colinies from Europe. The indentured servant signs a paper agreeing to work for 3-7 yrs. for the landowner. After that time, they are free to start their own farm.

  1. In colonial times, women and girls performed jobs such as cleaning, toke care of the home, helped farming, weaving cloth, toke care of the children, cooking, making butter, cheese, candles, and soap
  2. In colonial times boys were farming, and hunting, cutting firewood, and raising animals.
  3. The N.J. colony had the following industries iron mining, whaling and fishing, lumber, and glass making.
  4. The two of people that worked on colonial farms were the indentured servants, and the inslaved Africans.

When I reached North America on Verrazanos ship, we sailed along the coast, then we anchored the ship. The lenape came a board are ship and were not afraid. Verrazano took a small boat out and explored the bay and the river.
